Abstract

This article explores Iranian metropolitan architecture prior to and during the domination of modernism as well as the confused present era.
During the Islamic period hundreds of years prior to modernism, the architectural style dominating the design and atmosphere of cities was an essential channel of expression for Iranian arts. Traditional culture was concretely visualized through the means of architecture, although its cultivation was strongly diminished during the era of Modernism.
Today, the street layouts, renovations in old structures, preplannings and the construction of high-rises, are a clear reflection of the confusion ensued from and embeded in present architectural and metropolitan muddled plannings.
