Abstract

Symbolism was born into literature in 1880 A.D. Symbolic expression is indirect and somewhat beyond the ordinary level of communication. Its relation to existence is similar to that of an angle to its sides. An angle is ascertainable so long as the two sides exist. Without them, it has no meaning. Likewise, a person’s shadow can possibly exist or is perceived only in relation to and in the light of the person’s presence. Symbols do not inherently exist and are dependant on and connected to their associative, conceptual source
