Abstract

F or two centuries of the presence of western theatre in Iran, due to establishing of printing offices, translating and publishing the works of great playwrights, in particular, and the nternational exchanges, theatre has been able to achieve a proper place within the urban associations. However it could neither meet its full potential, nor it could be institutionalized. Overall, only a few could be identified as theatrte directors.
Unfortunately, most of the theatre artists have considered this new position, similar to the position of Mo'in-ol-Boka in earlier performances.
111is article is an attempt to explain the emergence of the term, the development and the cultural contribution of this position, and the director's commitments and obligations. It is also an attempt to clarity the designation of the 20th century as the «Director's Age» by some practitioners.
It should be mentioned that the author is not ignoring
the contribution and the place of playwrights and their important and valuable roles in theatre.
