Abstract

Semiotics is one of the new sciences that recently have entered the contemporary
researches. It is more or less used in urban planning and studies as well, although not completely direct and expanded. Since urban phenomenon naturally desire to be hidden and only their results are obvious, semiotics can be a useful tool for producing qualified data of the cities. This paper is consisted of three main parts. First presents the meaning of semiology after a short glance to the contexts and basical definitions then with take a look at conceptual bases of "Ferdinand de Saussure" semiotics, will guide to his indices in semiology. Afterward with referring to Umberto Eco and other refer¬ences this paper categories of semiology will be configured:

. Visual semiotics
. Pictorial semiotics
At the last step, in every category definitions are described, Saussurian indices are discussed and at the end the direct application of each category in urban planning is presented as well.
