Abstract

Semiotics is the scientific study of signs and sign functions. In the late seventies, Keir Elam, Tadeusz Kowzan, Anne Ubersfeld, Patrick Pavis, Andre Helbo and Macro de Marinis began to define semiotics of theatre and drama. They focus on the semiotics inquiry into how meaning is created and communicated through system of encodable and decodable signs. Semiotics is opening up a new way of practices and possibilities of see¬ing. It has paid attention to spectator, as a receiver and as a signifier. How signifiers are presented for being read by the audience is the ultimate responsibility of the director. This study is an exploration of the director's role as selector, constructor, composer and unifier of the audio-visual signs. One of the most important responsibilities of the director is to ensure that the sign-systems are operating properly, either in isolation or in relation to other systems. Emphasizing on each sign-system affect the style, genre and meaning of performance. This study aimed at discovering the relation of selection, development, and evaluation and emphasizing on a single sign or on sign-system as well as the process of meaning construction or incomprehensibility of perfonnance.
