Abstract

The emergence of Post-modern era, and the wane of previously cherished values and principles has confronted architectural education with a crucial problem. What is the mission of the school of architecture at the time of waning values, and the promotion of which principles should be on the agenda?
The paper first describes the necessary grounds for: 1) teaching architecture, and 2) educating an architect. In that regard, the fundamentals of the past and present Iranian architectur are analyzed and compared from four viewpoints of utility, firmness, beauty, and exaltedness. Whether the school of architecture should produce architecture or architect is discussed later
Emphasizing the importance of the issues of knowledge, skill, and value to be addressed by schools of architecture, the paper proposes the experience of three consecutive stages of purification, training, and wisdom by students during their course of architectural education.
