Abstract

This critical inquiry aimed at enlightening the origin of black man who had appeared in the traditional Farcical Iranian play, ROOHOZI. Black men appeared in Iranian miniatures, ritual ceremonies and the SIYAVASH epic, whose name meant black man: led us to this fact that the figure of the black man existed in Iranian culture before his presence on the stage. By signifying the signs in the mentioned documents the mythological figure who had been transformed into the existing black man was portrayed: Dumozi the first prototype of vegetation god whose life depicted the cause of death and rebirth of the earth during winter and spring for Sumeriams. Furthermore by appealing to Demezil’s theory a close relationship between earth and black color was displayed. At the beginning of every new spring, mysterious men
gave rebirth and they used black color as a symbol to imply they came back from underworld, the world of darkness. They celebrated their rebirth as well as the earth’s. During history men lost their beliefs in mysterious aspects of black men but these men remained happy makers by buffoonery, singing and dancing. Finally they appeared on Iranian traditional scene as comedians.
