Abstract

This article is an introduction to relationship in urban design, and is structured into four parts. First the introduction, covering the role of relationship as the central concept within
the urban design principles. The second part covers meaning and concept of the term, identifying its connection with the two other concepts: part and whole. Part three describes briefly the appearance of relationship within historical precedents of urban structure and space. In order to make the meaning clear, an emphasis has been given to Cullen’s Serial Vision. The relating forms in his drawings have been extracted and presented separately, a matter, which until now has been disregarded. The concluding remarks summarizes two guiding principles that gradually can accomplish relationship within the old historic fabric and street space.
